A Guide for the Use of Digital Elevation Model Data for Making Soil Surveys
نویسنده
چکیده
1988 PREFACE The intent of this publication is twofold: (1) to serve as a user guide for soil scientists and others interested in learning about the value and use of digital elevation model (DEM) data in making soil surveys and (2) to provide documentation of the Soil Landscape Analysis Project (SLAP). This publication provides a step-by-step guide on how digital slope-class maps are adjusted to topographic maps and orthophotoquads to obtain accurate slope-class maps, and how these derivative maps can be used as a base for soil survey pre-maps. In addition, guidance is given on the use of aspect-class maps and other resource data in making pre-maps. The value and use of tabular summaries are discussed. Examples of the use of DEM products by the authors and by selected field soil scientists are also given. Additional information on SLAP procedures may be obtained from USDA, Soil The slope and aspect products and the procedures for using these products have evolved during 5 years of cooperative research with the USDA, Soil Conservation Service and Forest Service, and the USDI, Bureau of Land Management.

Typical routine surveys of soils are relatively expensive in terms of time and cost and due to the fact that maps have been traditionally developed and considering their dependence on experts' opinions, updating maps is time consuming and sometimes not economical as well. While soil digital mapping, using soil various models - the Landscape, leads to simplification of the complexity found in na...

Mapping the spatial distribution of soil taxonomic classes is important for useful and effective use of soil and management decisions. Digital soil mapping (DSM) may have advantages over conventional soil mapping approaches as it may better capture observed spatial variability and reduce the need to aggregate soil types. A key component of any DSM activity is the method used to define the relat...

Soil classification systems are very useful for a simple and fast summarization of soil properties. These systems indicate the method for data summarization and facilitate connections among researchers, engineers, and other users. One of the practical systems for soil classification is Soil Taxonomy (ST). As determining soil classes for an entire area is expensive, time-consuming, and almost ...

Digital Elevation Model is one of the most important data for watershed modeling whit hydrological models that it has a significant impact on hydrological processes simulation. Several studies by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) as useful Tool have indicated that the simulation results of this model is very sensitive to the quality of topographic data. The aim of this study is evaluati...
